Permissions
This page lists what members are allowed to do in a Kumoy organization. Use it as a reference to look up whether a specific role can perform a specific action. For the concepts behind these settings and how they combine, see Seats and Roles.
How to Read This Page#
Permissions in Kumoy follow two independent axes:
- Organization operations (managing the organization, members, teams, and billing) depend on the member's organization role: Owner, Admin, or Member.
- Content operations (creating, editing, and viewing maps, projects, and data) depend on the member's team role in each team: Editor or Viewer. The Editor team role can only be given to a member with an Editor seat, so seat type sets the ceiling for content access.
In the tables below, ✅ means the action is allowed and ❌ means it is not.
Organization Permissions#
These permissions are controlled by the organization role. They are independent of seat type and team role.
| Action | Owner | Admin | Member |
|---|---|---|---|
| Belong to the organization and use assigned teams and projects | ✅ | ✅ | ✅ |
| Invite members to the organization | ✅ | ✅ | ❌ |
| Change a member's seat type | ✅ | ✅ | ❌ |
| Change a member's organization role | ✅ | ✅ | ❌ |
| Remove members from the organization | ✅ | ✅ | ❌ |
| Create, edit, and delete teams | ✅ | ✅ | ❌ |
| Add, change, or remove team members | ✅ | ✅ | ❌ |
| Edit organization settings | ✅ | ✅ | ❌ |
| Assign the Owner role | ✅ | ❌ | ❌ |
| Change the plan and add-ons (billing) | ✅ | ❌ | ❌ |
| Delete the organization | ✅ | ❌ | ❌ |
For step-by-step instructions, see Manage Organization Members and Manage Teams.
Content Permissions#
These permissions are controlled by the team role in each team, and a member can have a different role in each team. The Editor team role requires an Editor seat; a member with a Viewer seat can only be a Viewer. Both roles can open and explore the content shared with the team, but only Editors can create, edit, publish, or delete it.
Viewing and Exploring#
| Action | Editor | Viewer |
|---|---|---|
| Open web maps shared within the team | ✅ | ✅ |
| Open standalone vectors and rasters, including their metadata | ✅ | ✅ |
| Pan, zoom, and rotate the map | ✅ | ✅ |
| Toggle layer visibility and expand or collapse legends | ✅ | ✅ |
| Inspect a feature's attributes from the map | ✅ | ✅ |
| Open the attribute table and sort, reorder, or hide columns | ✅ | ✅ |
| Filter data in the attribute table (temporary, per view) | ✅ | ✅ |
| Select and locate features from the attribute table | ✅ | ✅ |
| Open the Share panel and copy the map's share link | ✅ | ✅ |
Creating and Editing#
| Action | Editor | Viewer |
|---|---|---|
| Create and edit projects | ✅ | ❌ |
| Manage projects within the team | ✅ | ❌ |
| Create and upload maps, vectors, and rasters | ✅ | ❌ |
| Edit vector features and attributes (QGIS and web) | ✅ | ❌ |
| Edit map, vector, and raster details (name, description, attribution) | ✅ | ❌ |
| Save and delete maps, vectors, and rasters | ✅ | ❌ |
| Publish a map to the web | ✅ | ❌ |
| Change a map's publication status (public/private) and keyphrase | ✅ | ❌ |
People who open a public map or a keyphrase-protected map without signing in can view it without a seat or a team role. See Seats and Roles for details.
Effective Access by Combination#
Because organization roles and team roles are independent, the same member can manage the organization while only viewing content, or edit content without any organization-management access. The Common Combinations table shows how the two axes combine.
